Information and Communication Technology Companies, more commonly addressed as ICT, are achieving a growing relevance within the Spanish business ecosystem. Over the past five years, from 2011 to 2016, the creation of ICT firms has gone from 2.683 to 3.595, which entails a 34% increase. Almost 4% of the companies created last year in Spain belonged to the ICT industry, according to Infoempresa.com, our financial and economic information service.
ICT companies are an undoubtable innovation indicator for countries and the prior data portrays that Spain is going through a positive period. Between 2015 and 2016, the market experienced a 3.3% growth, according to the sector organization Ametic; and the investment figures registered a 3.2% increase.
Due to the nature of these companies, most of them are located in the main two Spanish business hubs: Madrid and Barcelona. 28% of the new ICT firms created in 2016 were born in Madrid and 23% in Barcelona.
A growing sector requires a bigger workforce: direct employment figures within the Spanish ICT corporations currently surpass the 200.000 jobs threshold.
